Bride 1945
She was so young then, he wasn’t much older
He loved her some then, he was a soldier
She wrote him every day, so far across the sea
He sent her a postcard, of the boys in his company
The war was over, yeah they got married
Everything clover, her and her Harry
They planned a future, what’s a girl to dream about
A home in the suburbs, if they could learn to do without
Rollers and hairpins, she doesn’t care now
Harry’s a salesman, he’s never there now
It’s all for nothing, and the kids don’t care at all
One just quit college, and the youngest left last fall
She was so young then, he wasn’t much older
He loved her some then, he was a soldier
They planned a future, what’s a girl to dream about
A home in the suburbs, if they could learn to do without.
Nashville Again
It's a long way to Nashville but I've seen that road before.
Here's hoping that he knows me when I stand outside his door
But some wind came up this evening, all the stars have gone away
And there'll be a storm before the dawn, but I can't turn back no more
It's been a year since I’ve seen him, it's been a year spent underground
I've told the wind a thousand times I didn't mean to let him down
But the promises of seasons have long left the frozen trees
Now silent rumors tell he's done quite well with a new love he has found
If he's found herself a good deal, well then I guess I can't complain
Just kiss him once for good luck and ask him what might be her name
Then we’ll talk some of the good times and seek out a rainbow sign
But I have loved too long to be that strong, and I hope it doesn't rain
Poor Uncle Dudley
Poor Uncle Dudley, he had a car that wouldn’t start any time it rained
He’d fall about, then get locked out of the foundry
He never made it, he kept the cardboard in the soles of his Sunday shoes
The fish he caught were never bought by the market
Oh how I miss him, oh how I miss his great lies
No one to rock me when I’m lonely, no one to lift me when I’m down
I can remember, he had a suitcase full of places he’d never been
Shanghai and Wales, great ships with sails, naked ladies.
Oh how I miss him, oh how I miss his great lies
No one to rock me when I’m lonely, no one to lift me when I’m down
Put it together, I wish I’d asked him for the secret of his success
He’d make you feel his dreams were real solid silver.
Oh how I miss him, oh how I miss his great lies
No one to rock me when I’m lonely, no one to lift me when I’m down
Poor Uncle Dudley, he had a car that wouldn’t start any time it rained
He’d fall about, then get locked out of the foundry
He never made it, he kept the cardboard in the soles of his Sunday shoes
The fish he caught were never bought by the market
Oh how I miss him, oh how I miss his great lies

Louise
They all said Louise was not half bad
It was written on the walls and window shades
And how she’d act the little girl
A deceiver, don’t believe her, that’s her trade
Sometimes a bottle of perfume
Flowers or maybe some lace
Men brought Louise ten cent trinkets
Their intentions were easily traced
And everybody knew at times she cried
Ah but women like Louise, well, they get by
And everybody thought it kinda sad
When they found Louise in her room
They’d always put her down below their kind
Still some cried when she died this afternoon
Louise rode home on the mail train
Somewhere to the south, I heard them say
Too bad it ended so ugly
Too bad she had to go this way
Ah but the wind is blowing cold tonight
Goodnight Louise goodnight
They all said Louise was not half bad
It was written on the walls and window shades
And how she’d act the little girl
A deceiver, don’t believe her, that’s her trade
Sometimes a bottle of perfume

Lose My Blues
I met him at a dance, I thought I’d take a chance
So I held him tight when I heard those fiddles play
So now I’ll tell the news: he made me lose my blues
Just one little kiss and I threw them all away
I got a love so true and nothing you could do could change me
I’m gonna let it shine just like a blinding light
But I’ll be back for more, I’ll be a-tapping at your door
Gonna climb the hill where the whippoorwills sing tonight
Tell me now who you love, my honey my turtle-dove
Come a little closer and drink my cherry wine
Whisper in my ear the words I want to hear
And I’ll be your mama till the end of time
At the break of dawn we’ll both be gone my baby
We’ll get lost far across the sea
You can run in the sun, I’ll play on my tin-drum
Tell your ma, tell your pa, you’ve run away with me
Oh that man’s so fine, and he’s a friend of mine
So when you see us coming, just greet us with a little brass band.

You Don't Need a Gun
I walk the floor til morning, I can’t get my rest
Thinking about a dead man, I loved him the best
I told him he was useless, I proved it to his face
So with his knife he took his life, And me I can’t escape
Oh you don’t need a gun to shoot him down
Everybody knows a drowning man will drown
The sheriff won’t arrest me, he can’t prove a thing
I got my friends around me to shield my broken wing
And I got the face of Jesus, hanging on the wall
I can’t sleep if they speak up accusing me at all
Oh you don’t need a gun to shoot him down
Everybody knows a drowning man will drown
I stood before the jury, the trial was nearly done
I told them I love mankind, I love everyone
Then I met his dear old momma on the courthouse steps
Bowed my head down low, just to show, well I had some respect
Oh you don’t need a gun to shoot him down
Everybody knows a drowning man will drown
Now every time I meet myself in some window pane
I drain the bottle to the dregs, to ease my burning brain
I even try to find a hole for me to hide away
Everywhere I’m still there, I guess I’ll have to stay
Oh you don’t need a gun to shoot him down
Everybody knows a drowning man will drown
I walk the floor til morning, I can’t get my rest
Thinking about a dead man, I loved him the best
I told him he was useless, I proved it to his face

The Ballad of Honest Sam
There never was a bad man in the movies, who could lie and cheat like Honest Sam
In the card games down at Louie's, he takes the pay from the working man
So lay your cards on the table, and everybody show his hand
Foiled again you sad-eyed loser, foiled again by Honest Sam
Once there came a simple stranger, he caught Sam cheating, and words was said
Sam just winked at Joe the Strangler, and Joe he shot that stranger dead
So lay your cards on the table, and everybody show his hand
Foiled again you sad-eyed loser, foiled again by Honest Sam
Now Honest Sam lives in a mansion, Mar-a-Lago by the sea
And if the devil’s paid his ransom, Well then I guess he’d pay for you and me
So lay your cards on the table, and everybody show his hand
Foiled again you sad-eyed loser, foiled again by Honest Sam
There never was a bad man in the movies, who could lie and cheat like Honest Sam
In the card games down at Louie's, he takes the pay from the working man

If I Could Stay
If I could stay, I’d stay here with you
To partake of your pleasures, like I used to do
But I’m restless and cold, I think I’ll grow old, feeling hungry.
If I brought you a dove, in a cinnamon tree
Would you cage her with comfort, like you put upon me
Or would you leave her to fly, to seek out the sky, and the fire
If I was a painter, I’d paint you a scene
All of roses and children, like you see in your dreams
Ah but I must escape, I’m not part of this fate, I’m a stranger, I’m a stranger
If I was a train, I’d know the right track
For to find my way out of here, or to find my way back
Well I might need a cure, but I’m not really sure, that would change me
That would change me, that’d change me, oh yes that’d change me
If I could stay, I’d stay here with you
To partake of your pleasures, like I used to do
But I’m restless and cold, I think I’ll grow old, feeling hungry.
If I brought you a dove, in a cinnamon tree
Would you cage her with comfort, like you put upon me

Any Day Woman
If you don't love her, better let her go
You'll never fool her, you're bound to let it show
Love's so hard to take when you’ve got to fake everything in return
You just preserve her when you serve her a little tenderness
If she's a woman, she'll try to make it last
If you're a man now, you better end it fast
There's no reason here, no treason here
It’s just the way of a woman's mind
And she has no blame, she has no shame, she just loves you
And it's not easy to undo the done
Nor to speak too freely to just anyone
And if this takes more than you've bargained for
Then boy, it's time you learned
Not to talk so loud or walk so proud when you're comin' on
If you don't love her, why don’t you let her go
You'll never fool her, you're bound to let it show
And if this takes more than you've bargained for
Then boy, it's time you learned
Not to talk so loud or walk so proud when you're comin' on
If you don't love her, better let her go
You'll never fool her, you're bound to let it show
Love's so hard to take when you’ve got to fake everything in return

Long Afternoons
Once I had a sweetheart, he loved only me
He knew how to touch, and how to tune me
He knew how to kiss, and to move in my rhythm
No need to explain how I feel about him
His hair it was dark, dark brown in the sun
I could blow it away, when it came down undone
So clean and so strong, like a flower on the mountain
No need to explain how I feel about him
His secrets and stories, we shared in our room
I remember them well, and the long afternoons
His words falling softly, like the mist from a fountain
No need to explain how I feel about him
Soon the hayfields will ripen, soon the berry will show
And they’ll fade into autumn, to lie under the snow
Some years among many, leave much more to remember
No need to explain how I feel about him
Once I had a sweetheart, he loved only me
He knew how to touch, and how to tune me
He knew how to kiss, and to move in my rhythm
No need to explain how I feel about him
His hair it was dark, dark brown in the sun
I could blow it away, when it came down undone
So clean and so strong, like a flower on the mountain
