Geoff Muldaur (Kweskin Jug Band) has assembled an all-star string
band to romp and stomp their way through blues, jug band, Western swing
and hillbilly music of the 20s and 30s: Grammy-winning Dobro player
Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Asleep at the Wheel), multi-instrumentalist
and singer Johnny Nicholas (Big Walter Horton, Johnny Shines), bassist
Bruce Hughes (Poi Dog Pondering, Jason Mraz), and fiddle whiz Suzy Thompson,
with the big jug band kahuna himself, Jim Kweskin, guesting on vocals
and guitar. Cashdollar, Nicholas and Hughes all live in Austin,
Texas, and Muldaur and Kweskin both hang their hats in Los Angeles, while
Thompson lives in Berkeley – the Texas Sheiks isn’t an ongoing
touring act, so a performance by the Texas Sheiks is definitely a special
event. The Texas Sheiks was put together as a project to distract
beloved Austin guitar icon Stephen Bruton (Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson)
from his battle with cancer. Unfortunately
he lost that fight last May, but the group had so much fun playing together
that they decided to reunite for a couple of live shows, one in Austin
and one in Berkeley. Suzy says: "Recording the Texas Sheiks
album was just the way making a record really should be, but seldom
is: all the musicians together in one room, minimal rehearsal, maximum
mind-meld, easy, intense, grooves like crazy, musically satisfying." This
isn't going to be a touring band, at this point the Austin gig and
the gig at the Freight are the only two live performances scheduled,
so if you can make one or the other, please do! Here’s what reviewers are saying about Geoff Muldaur & the
Texas Sheiks: “Got the blues? Here’s the cure. These singers and
players sound happy and the feeling is completely contagious. The blend
of competence and joy in these performances is enough to satisfy anyone
for a long time!” - Malcolm Jones, Newsweek "A virtuosic and engaging survey of roots/old-time/string band
music featuring an assortment of musical heavyweights." - John
T. Davis, Austin American Statesman “A sinuous merging of string-band, blues and ancient pop. Muldaur
only sings half the songs. The album is also a showcase for Johnny Nicholas,
60, one of the finest - and least known - American blues singers. “He’s
phenomenal,” Muldaur said. “A scary voice and raw sexuality.” Born
in Rhode Island and now a Texas restaurant owner, Nicholas has played
with Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl and Asleep at the Wheel as well as blues
great Big Walter Horton.” - Daniel
